Soul Cakes for the Ancestors

I was inspired by Miss Wondersmith's article on soul cakes which you can find here. I maintain an ancestor altar in the form of a very personalized, multi-layered, Black Hawk bucket. I remember the very first night putting it up and the very intense dream that came later that night with a man named Edward as well as my deceased father, Richard. I talk about it in the very first episode of CtW. 

Shortly after that I had a very intense ghost box session, in which I believe the voice of my Uncle Hardy comes not over the ghost box, but as an EVP. I ask if they are there. He replies, "We are right here." I believe that. I don't fully understand it, but I've had enough experience and heard enough anecdotal tales to have formed some vague understanding of spirits and their interactions with us and our deceased loved ones care for us. And so, when it is the birthday of one of my ancestors, or Halloween, I do something special. 

Here is what I gathered:

  • 1 Oz Mango Ceylon Black Tea
  • 2.5 Oz Hazel nuts
  • .5 Oz Hickory nuts
  • 5 Oz Currants
  • 1.5 Oz Hawthorn Berries
  • 1 Apple
  • 3 Cups Pastry Wheat Flour
  • 1 Stick Butter
  • 1 Cup Brown Sugar
  • 2 whole nutmeg nuts, ground
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1.5 tsp Ginger
  • 1 Egg
  • 1.5 tsp Baking Powder
  • Contents of 3 Cardamom pods

I began by brewing 1 cup of the tea, to which I added to the 3 cups of flour, 1 Egg, 1.5 tsp baking powder, 1 cup brown sugar and 1 stick of butter. Stir until you have a dough.

You will need to have soaked the Hawthorn berries and removed the seeds. Throw them in a food processor along with all the other goodies. When you have a good crumble, throw it in the dough. I put them on a cookie sheet and baked at 350 for about 10 minutes. I then brewed a pot of the mango tea to serve with the soul cakes. Kelly and I also ate one. They were, surprisingly to her, very delicious!

As for how you go about the ceremony, it's entirely up to you, and should be personalized.
