You may have recently read Nick Farrell's post WMT Kabbalah is no longer my personal magical system’s backbone. I'd like to take this opportunity to respond to what I've seen as a growing disdain in the occult community towards Hermetic Qabalah. I'd begin with saying I've learned a lot from following Nick Farrell online over the years and from his books as well, and I think he should do more YouTube videos.
Rabbi Lamed Ben Clifford (Lon Milo DuQuette) tells us that "Chicken Qabalah" was a term used by a hateful old man attending his YOU-CAN-FORGET-90-PERCENT-OF-WHAT-YOU-KNOW-ABOUT-THE-QABALAH seminar. The old man insisted Rabbi Lamed Ben Clifford's teachings were schijt and not true Kabbalah in the least.
Here's a secret DuQuette reveals to us:
So-called orthodox Qabalahs are only other people's Chicken Qabalahs that have been around for a long time.
Now.... an institution is:
a society or organization founded for a religious, educational, social, or similar purpose.
an established law, practice, or custom.
You may have noticed that institutions are failing at all levels of society. Why? Pope Francis recently stated that Gnosticism was the greatest threat to contemporary society. He's been on about this since 2013. The fascination of Gnosticism—he said—is that of “ a purely subjective faith whose only interest is a certain experience or a set of ideas and bits of information which are meant to console and enlighten, but which ultimately keep one imprisoned in his or her own thoughts and feelings”.
In other words, institutionalized thoughts and feelings will set you free.
They are all liars. -Goat
Nick, in his article states:
Most obviously, there are the planetary attributions which are way off. Placing Saturn in the Supernal triad makes no sense at all and results in some rather daft polarities. Venus does not polarise against Mercury, nor Mars against Jupiter. Jupiter might be expansive but it really polarises against the constrictive Saturn. The position of Geburah (Justice) as being a Martian force is in the wrong place on the pillar of form which is a passive matter orientated pillar in opposition to the pillar of force.
Now I would argue with these statements — I have reason to — my main point of argument being with his statement on the Abyss — and I would... if I thought that Qabalah was the territory and not the map.
I am somewhat overjoyed to see that Nick Farrell's post is subversive in nature. Few people today would understand the Golden Dawn's system of Kabbalah as he does. He has decided it is not his Kabbalah. His journey continues to unfold. He is not imprisoned within institutional walls, thinking institutional thoughts, feeling institutional feelings. If only we could all attain to this.
The Western Esoteric Tradition itself is being overhauled thanks to the work of subversive magicians thinking outside the institutions. This is true too of all other societal institutions. Marital, Religious, State, Federal, Global. Change is good for us. Our world is not static, and so neither are our maps.
